Many thanks again for the great discussion yesterday. It was really interesting to see a different approach to organizing Free Software - definitely a lot of food for thoughts!
As promised, I send you the profile of the developers that we are looking for (below). Many thanks here again, I really appreciate the help!
I'll also send you, later on, the recap I'll hopefully write of what I've heard and understood of the Brazilian Free Software community and culture. It may take some time, as I'll first have to get back and get settled again - but I'll keep you informed : )
== Developer profile ==
FarSides is a new online game studio, producing free software multiplayer games on the Web. We are currently developing two games - a story-driven adventure game (Humanity Project) and a card game (Card Stories)
We apply the free software philosophy and methods to the video game genre. For example, all the discussions take place within the community, on a public mailing-list. We also use a decentralized model - which basically means that we work over the Internet, telecommuting from different places around the globe.
See http://farsides.com/wiki/Company_manifesto and http://farsides.com/wiki/Social_Contract for more details.
Key responsibilities
Develop features for our multiplayer online games
Collaborate with all other contributors - game design, art, other programmers
Follow the mailing-list and the forum discussions, interact with the community to provide answers and encourage participation.
Play the game on a regular basis and interact with other players to get a permanent feel of the player's experience
Profile and qualifications
Must-have :
Strong development experience with PHP/MySQL/JS (jquery)
Proficient with Linux/Apache web hosting server environment
Fluent in English and excellent written communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively through online medium (mailing-list, forums), with contributors and community members.
Confidence in working publicly and discussing issues openly - participation to a free software project requires a high sense of transparency
Ability to think creatively and analytically
Ability to work with high autonomy - telecommuting requires a strong sense of self-discipline, proactiveness and taking responsibility for deadlines. Great attention to detail.
Display a positive, professional attitude with strong work ethics. Able to focus on solutions rather than problems.
Pluses (not mandatory):
Experience with Free Software philosophy and development methods
Knowledge of object oriented development
Familiarity with social network APIs
Experience with unit tests
Familiarity with our technical requirements
Experience with working with online communities, though not necessarily professionally
Participated to the development of at least one game (professionally or as a hobby), in a programmer position. Produced games can be online or offline, but online/multiplayer experience a definite plus.
Experience in a SCRUM environment
